Daimler has completed its withdrawal from McLaren Group as a shareholder, Manipe F1 has learned, officially ending over a decade of part-ownership of the Woking-based firm. McLaren's buyout of Daimler's 40% stake was completed by New Year's Eve, over two years after the German car manufacturer announced its takeover of Brawn GP.

Daimler, parent company of Mercedes-Benz, purchased its 40% share of McLaren Group in January 2000 after six years as the team's engine supplier, which included two years of championship successes in 1998 and 1999. However, having failed to acquire a majority stake in the team, Mercedes took a 75.1% share of the 2009 championship-winning team, Brawn GP, as part of a joint deal with Aabar in November 2009.

Daimler's departure from McLaren Group now means that Ron Dennis and TAG Group (headed by Mansour Ojjeh) each own 25% of the company, with the remaining 50% belonging to the Bahraini Mumtalakat Holding Company, the state investment arm of Bahrain. McLaren Group is the parent company of all McLaren's operations at its Woking HQ, including its F1 team (McLaren Racing), road car firm (McLaren Automotive), electronics business (McLaren Electronic Systems) and more.

Since Daimler announced its decision to withdraw from ownership of McLaren, the Whitmarsh-led team has twice finished second in the constructors' championship, notched up 11 race wins and launched it very own supercar, the MP4-12C.

Daimler, by contrast, has put its weight behind its own F1 team, Mercedes AMG. Daimler purchased 45.1% of Brawn GP in 2009, with a further 30% going to Daimler shareholder Aabar Investments of Abu Dhabi. Despite wining both championships as Brawn GP, the team has so far failed to claim a victory under the Mercedes moniker and has taken only three podium finishes in 38 races.

McLaren and Mercedes retain a strong partnership however, with Mercedes engines due to power McLaren's F1 cars until 2015 at the earliest. McLaren also uses Mercedes' KERS unit, the most sought-after hybrid in the sport.
