Bus service struggling back, Lift still out of commission

It will likely be Friday or later before the full system is running again, Tulsa Transit General Manager Bill Cartwright said Wednesday.

"This snow storm really crippled us," he said. "I can't remember a time when the entire system had to shut down like this."

Meanwhile, Tulsa's trash and recycling collection will not resume Thursday because of the snowy road conditions, city spokeswoman Michelle Allen said. No decision has been made yet about the rest of the week.

At a media briefing Monday evening before the winter blast that left 14 inches of snow across Tulsa, Cartwright was brimming with confidence about the ability of the heavy buses to continue running, going so far as to tell people that's how they should plan to get to work.No one was stranded, Cartwright said. The Tulsa Fire Department helped transport people home.

As of Wednesday afternoon, he was working to see that about 30 of the system's long buses were getting unstuck.

"The wrecker services are totally swamped, so we're working with Public Works to free up our buses and clear out our bus lots and stations," Cartwright said. "Those are our goals for today."

Thursday's service will depend on how many buses are operational and the accessibility of the routes, he said.Those decisions have not yet been made," he said. "But we are anxious to get the service going again."

Most people who use the system do not have regular access to cars and need it to get to work and run errands, he said.

"Getting it back up and running will help return things to normal for a lot of people," Cartwright said.

The Lift Program, which picks up paratransit passengers, is slower to get back in operation because it does a lot of traveling on residential streets, said Debbie Ruggles, the program's director. Because of that, it will have to wait at least another day before resuming operation.
